Application Description (PAD)
Are there really over 4,000 bad words in the English
language?
Not really. Most words by themselves are not necessarily offensive. They
become offensive when one combines them into a "color metaphor."
Offensive words and phrases are a matter of general opinion. That's why
with Disinfected Text you can add your own list and have the benefits of all
the character substitution checking and keyboard trick trapping handled
for you.
What's a keyboard trick?
A keyboard trick is when individuals use unconventional special characters,
numbers and/or HTML encoding to intentionally bypass current internet blogging
and free-form user input filters. Catching these types of exploits is what
Disinfected Text is all about.
Can I see the offensive phrase list?
We have spent a lot of time researching and collecting "bad" words and
offensive phrases. We have searched high and low, mostly low (sorry,
couldn't resist ;) for a comprehensive list of over 4,000 words and phrases
that will make a sailor blush. Currently this list is not exposed.
It does contain the most filthy and vile combinations of words and phrases
ever assembled electronically.
If you wish, you can blank out the list and add your own at runtime.
However, we cannot guarantee that your list will be optimized for "false
positives".
What's a "false positive"?
A "false positive" is when a word or series of letters gets blanked out because
a filter has interpreted it as an offensive word. For example, take the
word "scrapbook". Many filters would blank out the
letters "crap" producing an unacceptable and annoying "s****book
" in your blog post. Disinfected Text has been tested against several
great literary works to uncover many common "false positive" scenarios.
Catching all of them would be nearly impossible but the most common have
built-in countermeasures to prevent them from occurring. You can review
the current test set HERE.
What if I want to allow a certain word or phrase? Do I
have to add every combination?
Simply add an unlimited amount of words to the allowed phrase list (or the
disallowed list). You don't have to add every combination to the list,
just the base word. Disinfected Text handles all the numerical and
character substitutions for you. It also takes care of
the various other keyboard tricks for the words or phrases you add.
What type of technical expertise do I need to plug in
Disinfected Text?
This component is intended to be used by .NET programmers who can intercept

HERE for code samples.
An offensive phrase or clever keyboard combination made
it through the filter.
What should I do?
Report it to us using the form at the top of this page. We are
continually adding to the list and really want to know about character
substitutions and keyboard tricks that can get around the Disinfected Text
parsing engine. If you find something new, we will post your contribution
on the CREDITS page.
Can this component be used to filter email and web sites?
